American Angler Accurate 5-Day (July 21 – 26, 2020)

We had a very successful annual 5-day Accurate sponsored trip on the American Angler.  Thanks to Capt. Ray Lopez and the American Angler crew for "glassing" and putting us on some really nice bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna and yellowtail.  We loaded the boat around 10 am, left the bait receiver around 12:30 and was fishing at 3:30 pm (20 bft, 30 yft on the departure day).  We did this for 4 more days.  The last two days we were targeting...

Accurate 18-Day Royal Polaris Trip, Feb 8 – 26, 2020

We departed on the annual Accurate sponsored 18-day trip on the Royal Polaris on February 8, 2020.   With a fantastic load of sardines, Capt. Jeff DeBuys took us to the big tuna areas.  The fishing was on the tough side with a few big ones and medium size tuna.  The Wahoo fishing is very good and always exciting.  The passengers all had a great time.  I was filling in for the Jack Nilsen as the Accurate rep so most of...

2020 January, Accurate 14-day American Angler Trip

We had another successful Accurate sponsored 14-day trip on the American Angler.  We spent 6.5 days fishing for big tuna and wahoo.   We landed around 200 tuna and 100 good size wahoo.  The largest tuna was a kite fish (133#).  We had our usual 31 card tournament (just another excuse to give away prizes) as well as the crew 31 contest.  Ray Lopez and crew did a great job and I hope everyone can return next year to have more...

Rick Jensen Charter, Liberty, Nov 3-5, 2019

I was very fortunate to meet a great group of guys (assembled by Rick Jensen of SportfishingFinancial) for a 2-day charter trip on the Liberty out of Fisherman's Landing.  Taro Takeuchi is the owner/operator and he went the extra mile to get us bluefin and yellowfin tuna as evidenced by the fact that we did not return at the scheduled 5 pm but got back around 10 pm so we could land over 60 tuna on day 2.  We had...

October Moves – The NY/NJ Anglers Favorite Month

October is a magical month in the NY bight! The first thing anglers notice is that change in first light means sleeping later and fishing into the premature dark longer. The nights begin to chill, the day’s highs start in the 70's and struggle to make the high 60’s by months end. The ocean, however, holds on to the summer heat a little bit longer. The first of the month sees water temps in the 70’s, then the 60’s are...

2019 Sep 20-26 Calstar 6-Day Red Rooster III Trip

We primarily fished Guadalupe Island on this 6-day trip.  It was a very good trip with 4 days of fishing at the island for 40# to 100# yellowfin tuna.  There were some loses to the great white sharks but overall we were able to get a majority of the hooked tuna onto the boat.  This was a very friendly group of fishermen and we all learned the value of selecting a lively bait and being able to cast this bait...

Fishing Destination Spotlight – Pacific Northwest (Ilwaco, Wa.)

This summer was a hot one.  At my house we had 30 days straight this summer over 100.  My garden looked a little bleak in late July, early August. Our local fishing has been great, and it is another fantastic year of Bluefin Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, and Yellowtail.  That said they have been pretty line shy unless you are fishing on that magical day.  Scaled down tackle and busy rails of local sport boats are the norm when the fishing...

Super Clean Hollow Spectra Connection! – How To Tie The Nail Knot Finish

Hollow Braid Connections - Hollow to Solid/Hollow to Fluoro or Mono Connecting different types of fishing line can be a struggle for some anglers.  What knot do I tie?  How do I tie it? Fluoro, Mono, Braid to Braid….  Often times you would need several knots to tie them all or rely on a deckhand or tackle store employee to do it for you. With a bit of practice and few tools you can do this connection yourself. Let me start by...

Accurate 5-day American Angler Trip; July 21-26 2019

We got off to a early start on the Accurate 5-day  trip with Ray Lopez at the helm.  We took a little bit of a boat ride to fish yellowtail first.  Then it was even further to fish the yellowfin.  We knew we were in the right spot since there were at least 6 large seiners in the area and one of them was trying to wrap our yellowfin along with the American Angler.  The last 2 days was dedicated...

2019 June, Calstar 5-day Trip, American Angler

The 2019 5-day Calstar sponsored trip targeted bluefin and yellowtail.  Captain Ray Lopez put us on a lot of huge schools of BFT but most of the time they did not want to bite but boy did they fill up the sonar screen.   We saw lots of breezers and bird schools but the BFT would scatter when we tried to sneak up on them.  (The BFT were acting like "street racers" when the "cops" showed up).  We took a quick...
