Accurate 5-Day on the American Angler (July 27-Aug 1, 2021)

We were able to load and leave a little early on our annual Accurate 5-day Family fishing adventure.   Captain Ray Lopez took us to Guadalupe Island for fantastic yellowfin tuna fishing.  It has been several years since we last fished Guadalupe Island but boy was it worth the wait.  The primary batch of yft were in the 80# to 100# range.  A handful of 100# to 135# yft.  Mixed in were some good size yellowtail (30#-40#).  I will let the...

Accurate Searcher Trip July 2021

On July 19th, 2021, 27 anglers set out on a quest for Bluefin Tuna. Based on the fish on the docks and coming off of the boats on that Sunday morning, everyone was filled with hope that we would duplicate the the results of those arriving. Captain Mike piloted the Searcher away from the dock at Fisherman's landing around 10:00 AM and the usual hustle and bustle of gear preparation was underway. Over the ensuing days we encountered school after school of...

October Moves – The NY/NJ Anglers Favorite Month

October is a magical month in the NY bight! The first thing anglers notice is that change in first light means sleeping later and fishing into the premature dark longer. The nights begin to chill, the day’s highs start in the 70's and struggle to make the high 60’s by months end. The ocean, however, holds on to the summer heat a little bit longer. The first of the month sees water temps in the 70’s, then the 60’s are...

Fishing Destination Spotlight – Pacific Northwest (Ilwaco, Wa.)

This summer was a hot one.  At my house we had 30 days straight this summer over 100.  My garden looked a little bleak in late July, early August. Our local fishing has been great, and it is another fantastic year of Bluefin Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, and Yellowtail.  That said they have been pretty line shy unless you are fishing on that magical day.  Scaled down tackle and busy rails of local sport boats are the norm when the fishing...

Slow Pitch Jigging in South Florida/Dry Tortugas

Slow pitch jigging is a relatively new fishing technique pioneered in Japan that expands, and hyper-specializes, saltwater lure fishing.  Let’s not kid ourselves, jig fishing has been around for years and years, and the obvious question is “why is slow pitch jigging special?”  The answer is simple: it’s amazingly effective for nearly every fish that swims – especially in South Florida’s rich and productive Dry Tortugas/Pulley Ridge. Located approximately 100-150 miles west of Key West, the Dry Tortugas and Pulley Ridge...

Poppers for Pelagics’: West Coast Tuna Tackle

Braid, Wind-on, and Lures. Blast off. Popper fishing for big tuna is something that has been practiced, the Northeast Bluefin fishery and the Gulf Yellowfin fishery have been focal points of the technique. Puerto Vallarta is another location that saw anglers casting poppers in the past years but not until recently had it been a viable technique in the Southern California Bight with the introduction of larger Bluefin tuna. The East Coast tuna fishery has predominantly been a spinning reel/rod fishery for...

Proper Fish Care for your Catch

One important part of fishing when you are planning on bringing home table fare is to know how to take care of your catch once it is on the boat. This blog will give you some ideas of how fishermen go through the process of proper fish care on the boat. In addition, you will read about how a successful fish processor/restaurant entrepreneur does his daily care of fish coming into his facility. Proper care of fish once out of...

Catch more Fish: Prior Planning for Proven Performance

This blog outlines preparation for a basic weekly trip. The size of the fish and tackle might change, but the general process of preparation for the trip is consistent. If you create a list, post it somewhere that you will see it while preparing for your trips, and it will become part of your weekly regiment. Most of this seems pretty basic, but you would be surprised on how many fishermen miss things, and it could be small, but the...

Braid:Proven ways to attach braid to your spool

The fruits of the labor. Braid slippage means less reds landed and less table fare. Recently I was on a fishing trip here in southern California out of Long Beach on the sportfishing boat "Tornado" in a wide open rock fish bite. I was using a jig bouncing it on the bottom in 170 feet of water with my trusty BV-300 with 30lb braid and a fast taper rod to drive the hook home. The fish were cracking the jig on...
